What is Cryotherapy?
Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC) is a cutting-edge 3-minute treatment using liquid nitrogen vapor to help you heal. It’s been found to be more effective and efficient than an ice bath and offers benefits that traditional cold therapies cannot. This anti-inflammatory treatment exposes patients to temperatures between -190 and -256 degrees Fahrenheit for a short duration of time—typically 2 – 3 minutes. In those few minutes a patient’s blood vessels will rapidly constrict and skin temperatures will drop while the core body temperature remains unchanged. The shock to one’s system releases endorphins allowing for an immediate mood-boosting pick-me-up. Once the session is over, blood vessels begin to dilate, blood circulation is vastly improved and oxygen is distributed throughout the entire body. Cryotherapy’s ability to reduce inflammation makes it a popular treatment for athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and often arthritis sufferers.
While it seems San Diego cryotherapy came out of nowhere, the treatment has been practiced around the world for decades. WBC was developed in Japan in 1978 by Dr. Toshiba Yamaguchi as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. The results were excellent and news of Dr. Yamaguchi’s discovery of WBC quickly spread throughout Europe. For more than 35 years there have been numerous documented studies, mostly in Europe treating many different types of patients, including nearly all body types and situations, with positive results. Although there are much fewer American driven studies, since WBC has only been available in the U.S. for approximately 5 years, the U.S. studies are showing very similar results to those found in Europe for almost four decades.

What can I expect during a cryotherapy treatment?
Your introduction to Cryo Shield begins with a review and signing of our release-waiver form that details the few scenarios not permitted within the WBC Impact unit. Following the registration, we will provide a tour of our facility with an in-depth explanation of the procedure to help answer any questions or concerns. The last step is a mandatory blood pressure test that is performed prior to every WBC session. You are now ready to start enhancing your overall health and wellness.
Clients are guided to a selected room where the WBC Impact units are located. Inside each room, we will provide you with the mandatory items (gloves, socks and booties) worn during the procedure. Males are also required to wear cotton or wool undergarments for protecting the outer extremities (external parts). The more skin that is exposed during your treatment, the better overall results you will experience.
As your WBC session starts, you will immediately feel an even disbursement of LN2 (liquid nitrogen) throughout your entire body, except the head and upper neck area. The LN2 is applied in a dry vapor form. The starting temperature of procedure ranges from 14°F to -40°F depending on which of the 3 available levels you desire. Treatment temperatures reached during treatment range from -166°F to – 202°F also depending on desired level.
The skin surface is the only drop in temperature throughout the body, with the core remaining the same during and after the session. Sensors located within the skin’s surface control the central nervous system; by manipulating these sensors, whole body recovery is achieved. Cryotherapy sessions can last up to 3 minutes.
